383 | A Victorian carved Swiss walnut trinket box, the hinged lid decorated a reclining boy with 3 pugs raised on tassel supports, marked "Jakob Abplanalp Gold Medaille Geneva 1896" 17cm h x 28cm x 20cm . Jakob (also know as Jacob) Abplanalp (1860-1930) from Brienz (Black Forest) was a renowned carver known for highly technical carved reliefs. Exhibitions of his and others work in the late 19th Century brought Brienz wood carving to international fame. Abplanalp's famous relief of a Rose and Butterfly won the Chicago World's Fair Gold Medal and the Geneva Festival Gold Medal in 1896 of which this appears to be the presentation box. | 200-400 | |
