24 **Alfred Egerton Cooper R.B.A. (British, 1883-1974) The Firth of Forth with the British Fleet from HMA 9 Airship, oil on canvas, circa 1916, signed recto, Bourlet labels verso, 69cm h x 89cm w, within a painted wood frame. ** Artist's Re-sale Rights may be payable on this lot. Provenance: Sir Barnes Wallis thence by descent. Exhibited: possibly "Airships in Peace and War" Prince's Gallery, Knightsbridge, September 1919. Note: The R.9 was the first airship on which Barnes Wallis worked, serving as an assistant at Vickers under Chief Designer H. B. Pratt, and was the first British rigid airship to fly. Alfred Egerton Cooper and Wallis were close friends from their time together in the Artists Rifles, a connection that lends particular resonance to this work. This painting may be among the earliest works executed in flight, or developed from sketches made in the air, and was very likely painted during the same flight as the photograph "An aerial view of a portion of the Grand Fleet at anchor in the Firth of Forth, taken from the British Airship R.9" (Imperial War Museum, cat. no. Q 20633). The painting is prominently displayed on the wall of Barnes Wallis's office in the 1955 film "The Dam Busters", widely regarded as one of the best-known and most beloved British war films of the post-Second World War era.
140 A 2 inch aluminium sphere of the type used in the Teddington ship tanks during the development of the Golf Mine "bouncing bomb". Discovered in a box of Sir Barnes Wallis' lectures slides on the "Dam Busters" raid, the spheres were the next evolutionary step after the garden marbles leading eventually to the development of the Highball and Upkeep bombs. Between 9 June and 10 September 1942, Wallis made use of one of the two large indoor water tanks of The National Physical Laboratory at Teddington on at least 18 occasions, he stated "I moored a wax model of a battleship several hundred feet up the tank, broadside on. We fired 2in diameter balls at it, when of course after hitting the freeboard of the ship, the sinking velocity of the ball combined with back-spin to move it towards the ship, and by adjusting the mean density of the ball we were able to pass it right underneath "the soft underbelly", to quote Winston Churchill.
151 A Commander Of The Most Excellent Order of The British Empire, Civil Division silver gilt neck badge, 2nd Type, with original ribbon, by Garrard and Co Ltd, awarded to Sir Barnes Wallis in 1943, contained in original black fitted case with gilt lettering.

A E Cooper and Barnes Wallis were close friends and Cooper is thought to have gifted the picture to Wallis. The bomb was so large, there were no aircraft capable of lifting it to its optimal altitude but it could be dropped from a lower height and would enter the earth at near supersonic speed, penetrating to a depth of up to 20m before exploding. The Tallboy was used on strategic German targets such as V-2 rocket launch sites, the V-3 supergun bunker, submarine pens and the battleship Tirpitz, as well as large civil constructions such as viaducts and bridges
