Fausto Zonaro (1854-1929), a view from Uskudar, Istanbul of ladies and ferrymen at a jetty on the Bosphorus. Oil on panel signed lower right F Zonaro 18cm x 28cm. This lot has been authenticated from photographs by Erol Makzume who noted it has been poorly restored Fausto Zonaro arrived in Istanbul in 1891. Five years later in 1896 he was appointed court artist by Sultan Aldulhamit II and for nineteen years thereafter he was one of Istanbul's most renowned artists. SOLD £16500

This smaller version of Zonaro's oil on canvas 'The Boat' compared to the larger, lacks 3 dogs on the jetty. Also the lady with yellow parasol is lacking a face covering and her face is undefined. There is a small area of missing paint above the head of the lady in blue The painting has been passed from the vendors Great Aunt to Grandmother and now to their possession by inheritance The board marked en verso pencilled number 2475. The lot is unframed. The panel has ever such a slight warp but is generally quite flat. There is no retouching revealed under UV
