A Japanese dagger with 7 1/2" blade contained in a lacquered sheath £30-50 ILLUSTRATED

We have tried to look for character marks but are unable to remove the handle. The blade is slightly worse to the other side but the rust is just surface rust and not too deep. There is some paint loss to the handle and to the sheath and there is a slight split to the top of the sheath.
