Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987), Mildred Scheel, screenprint in colours with diamond dust, on Arches 88 paper, 1980, signed and editioned 590/1000 in pencil, 77cm x 55cm, within an ebonised wood frame. Note: Dr Mildred Scheel (1932-1985) was a German physician and the second wife of Walter Scheel, President of West Germany from 1974 to 1979. In 1974, she founded Deutsche Krebshilfe (German Cancer Aid), a charitable organisation dedicated to advancing cancer research and improving patient care. Her humanitarian work earned widespread admiration, and she was nominated for Germany's Woman of the Year in 1977, 1978 and 1979. Warhol, who became a close friend of Scheel, created this portrait in 1980. Combining photographic imagery with vibrant screenprinted colour, the work exemplifies the instantly recognisable portrait style he developed during the 1970s and 1980s. Mildred Scheel was published to raise funds for Deutsche Krebshilfe, the organisation she founded, and commemorates her enduring contribution to cancer research and patient welfare.
