Ethel Luella Curry (Canadian, 1902-2000), "Eastlake North Haliburton County", oil on board, signed recto, titled and dated July 1932 verso, 20cm x 25cm, within a painted wood frame. Note: Ethel Curry was a Canadian painter, printmaker, potter, and educator. Born in Irondale, Haliburton County, Ontario, in 1902, she studied at the Ontario College of Art beginning in 1924, where she learned from and worked alongside members of the Group of Seven, including Arthur Lismer and J.E.H. MacDonald. While in Toronto, Curry formed a lifelong friendship with fellow artist Doris McCarthy; the two met as students in the 1920s and later both taught in Toronto high schools. Curry spent much of her professional life as an instructor at Northern Vocational School before retiring in 1965 and returning to Haliburton, where she remained active in the local art community until her death in 2000.
