A rare mid 17th century Interregnum stumpwork portrait depicting a child dressed in richly articulated costume, holding a small dog beneath his left arm. In his hands he carries a quill and a letter inscribed "Give Thy selfe to learne my slam (psalm, 1656". Enclosed within an oval cartouche of leaf and berry motifs, further flanked in each corner by four winged angels. Composed of raised work consisting of collage and embroidery, using various fabrics, silk, coloured wool and metallised threads, on a pale gold silk ground, printed extract from Sir Matthew Hale's diary verso, 20cm x 17.5cm, within a dark stained wood frame.  £1000-1500
